‘Once in a lifetime experience’ for intern Lily

Law student Lily Pederick is an intern with NAAFLS this month. As part of her practical experience, she joined solicitors and caseworkers recently on a trip to Gunbalanya, which she said was a ‘once in a lifetime experience’.

“I have never flown by charter plane, and it was very new and exciting. The views were gorgeous” she said. Lily is part of vibrant internship program at NAAFLS, which lays the foundation for the next generation of socially aware, culturally competent 4Rs (regional, rural, remote and very remote) lawyers.

“The team I was with were extremely skilled at working in remote community setting. For example, always ensuring that the interpreter was happy to engage with certain people and listen to difficult topics” she said.

Lily chose to do her internship with NAAFLS because of the client centred approach NAAFLS takes to legal matters. “This holistic approach to justice is a rarity in many places (even though it shouldn’t be). I felt NAAFLS would offer an opportunity for a different learning experience. “
