If you’re a lawyer because you’re driven to help those less fortunate, then you’ll be with likeminded people at NAAFLS.
NAAFLS stands for North Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Service and we specialise in both legal and non-legal support for survivors of domestic, family and sexual abuse. As you can imagine, most of our clients are women and their children.
Our solicitors work in the Bush Court system which sees them travel to over 50 communities in the Top End, East Arnhem and Big River Regions of the NT. Bush Courts are a travelling Magistrate’s Court designed to make justice available to even the most remote Territorians and is an impressive example of grass roots law.
Our solicitors are expected to provide a high level of culturally appropriate legal assistance and advice. To do this, solicitors work in teams with Aboriginal case workers who provide non-legal support and offer cultural insights to build trusting relationships with clients. We’re unique in how closely case workers and solicitors work together.
Understanding how culture impacts our clients and being innovative about how to make ‘white man’s law’ work within Aboriginal communities is a challenge, but lawyers love challenges right!?
If you feel as passionately as we do about working with Aboriginal families, and have at least 12 months experience post admission under your belt, please introduce yourself. We’re on the hunt for impressive and passionate solicitors. This could be the change you’re looking for!
